Nyhavn

Nyhavn

Nyhavn or New Harbour is one of the most popular attractions in the Danish capital Copenhagen. Old canal that was dug in 1671 served as a waterfront for ships, and a refuge for weary sailors. For a long time, Nyhavn district was considered as the most unsafe place in the city. The quay acquired its current popularity after restoration in 1980.

Walking along Nyhavn is full of pleasant experience. In the very beginning, a huge anchor was set as a monument to the Danish sailors who died during World War II. Colourful well-maintained houses, age of which reaches three hundred years, decorate a kilometre long harbour by both sides. Once upon a time Hans Christian Andersen used to live and create his great writings somewhere here. Many cafes, bars, restaurants and souvenir shops spread along the quay, while old fishing boats and ships are moored everywhere in the water. Busy tourist centre soaked up with the atmosphere of the old Copenhagen is a favourite destination among locals and visitors alike.
